Too Cool for School

I know what you're thinking.... Why the heck is she doing a post about school?! Well, for those of you who don't know, I recently started my Master's degree in Interior Design at Utah State University. This program is pretty well known and believe me, I'm learning why. Since I graduated in Landscape Architecture (also at USU, I know, lame) I have quite a bit of design background. I've been pretty prepared for all the classes that I'm enrolled in now, but now I'm learning even more about my competency as a designer. For those of you who are interested what Interior Designer are trained to do, here are some of the things that you should know in order to be a great Interior Designer.

1) Lettering. This video says it all..

2) AutoCAD. We are trained in AutoCAD to draw house plans and design details. Yes, like an Architect, only we do interiors and a mixture of structure design and such.

Via DF Drafting

3) Sketching. Being able to display an idea quickly is very important with designers. Take this one from Frank Ghery when he was designing the Disney Concert Hall in California.

4) Material Hunting. Yes, this is a real thing. Some designers have HUGE libraries full of material samples.

This is from the design firm Mezzanine. Amazing!!

And now that you know more of what I'm doing in school.... Here's a peek at a project I've been working on for my Uncle.

It's a work in progress, but I'm headed to his house this weekend to put it all into play!
Now, don't you want to come join me in my educational adventures?!

I love this video! Really cool and I'm a huge fan of Frank's style of architecture. I love his squiggly drawings!

I love AutoCad, at first I didn't but in school we had to used it for engineering and I grew to love and appreciate it much. Best of luck with the Master's program. :)
